About
About
Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo, on the east side of Hawaiʻi Island. Kawika and Jamie Yoneda opened it in April 2016, and on its Facebook page the academy describes itself as the first Atos affiliate in Hawaiʻi. The name comes from Roma, the Hawaiian-language name for the Book of Romans. Head professor Kawika Yoneda is a black belt under Guilherme and Rafael Mendes, having moved to California in 2014 to train full time at their Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy in Costa Mesa. He teaches with Professor Todd Tokuyoshi, Professor Lance Owings and kids coach Cami Tokuyoshi, while Jamie Yoneda runs the academy as director. The kids competition team travels to tournaments around the state and on the mainland; at the 2026 IBJJF Honolulu Kids International Open the academy reports first place in the kids overall, pee wee and junior team standings. Adults start in the Basics class, then move up to Fundamentals and Adult Advanced; No-Gi is open to all belts. Kids train by age group (3-5, 5-7 and 8-13), with Kids No-Gi and a Kids Advanced team class for colored belts. Classes run on weekday mornings (except Wednesday) and again from late afternoon into the evening, with the academy closed midday, plus a two-hour open mat on Saturday morning. Visitors to the Big Island can drop in for $30 a class, and the first class is free for Big Island residents. Gis can't carry other schools' or affiliates' patches, and can be rented or bought at the academy.
