About
About
Sit Thaharnaek Muay Thai Gym (ศิษย์ทหารเอกมวยไทย) is a family-run Muay Thai camp in the Baan Benjarong village in Han Kaeo, Hang Dong District, about 18 km south-west of Chiang Mai's old city. It is run by Ajarn Hua (Thaharnaek Chumpaetour) and his family. Originally from Isan, Ajarn Hua started Muay Thai at 11, has more than 500 fights by the gym's count, and was at one point ranked number two at Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok. He worked as a trainer in Lamphun for several years before opening the gym in 2011, and later moved it to Hang Dong for more space and outdoor training: an open-sided hall with a ring, heavy bags and quiet roads for running. Group training runs twice a day, Monday to Saturday (9:00-11:00 and 16:00-18:00), in mixed-level groups from first-timers to professional fighters. A two-hour session usually covers skipping, stretching, shadow boxing and technique, pad rounds, bag work or sparring, clinching and conditioning; afternoons lean more toward sparring and clinching. Private sessions fit in between the group classes, and the gym is closed on Sundays. Fighters from around the world train here, and the gym can arrange fights in Chiang Mai or take students to the stadium to watch. Group training is 400 THB for one session, 700 THB for a day (two sessions), 2,200 THB for a week and 8,000 THB for a month (two sessions a day). Private sessions are 900 THB an hour with Ajarn Hua and 700 THB an hour with one of the other trainers. Larger groups are asked to get in touch in advance.
