About
About
South Sound Martial Arts (SSMA) is Tacoma's first gym teaching authentic Cambodian boxing, Kun Khmer (also called Pradal Serey). Kru Srab Sroeuy founded it in 1996, first teaching out of his own backyard and garage. Today the gym trains on the second floor of the Tacoma Soccer Center, right off I-5 in the Dome District, with parking on site. The 2,500 sq ft room has traditional heavy bags, kick pads, focus mitts and a 22 by 22 ft boxing ring. Training is traditional: fists, elbows, knees and shins, the elbow work and rhythm Kun Khmer is known for, and the Wai Kru ceremony performed before competition. Classes run from kids aged 6 to adults, beginner through advanced and pro fighters, in a family friendly room with over seven coaches and six active fighters. Kids train 5-6 pm and adults 6-7 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Alongside Kun Khmer the gym also lists Muay Thai. SSMA is a member gym of the Kun Khmer International Federation, where Kru Srab serves as Vice President. In 2007 he co-founded USEACA (United South East Asia Cultural Association), by the gym's account the only sanctioning body for Kun Khmer and Muay Thai in Washington State, and USEACA and SSMA promote an annual cultural fight night of amateur and pro Kun Khmer bouts at the Nisqually Youth Center in Olympia (the 22nd edition was October 24, 2026). Kru Srab also runs Srab Sroeuy Kun Khmer Gym in Phnom Penh and takes Tacoma students to train there. The SSMA Kun Khmer demo team performs at local events such as the Cambodian Cultural Celebration at Saltwater State Park, and in 2023 SSMA student Ritthichai Sit Sroeuy fought at the IFMA trials in Denver for a shot at Team USA. Memberships are month to month, a year contract, or private one-on-one sessions; rates are given in person. Your first class is free, with gloves and pads to borrow. Saturday mornings and Sundays are private sessions only.
